Chapter 18

Two days, two flights and barely any sleep later, I stood at the airport exit in San Diego. The moment I was given a phone, I dialed the number I recited in my head every day for three months. A honking horn down the street caught my attention as a black Toyota Revo 4x4 pulled to a sudden stop on the side of the road. The door flung opened, and I started running before I even noticed my feet were moving.

“REED!”

He met me halfway, catching me hard against his chest as I breathed in his musky scent. I cried honest to God tears, and I hadn't cried in a long time. Not at my mom's funeral, not the day I was given to Hector, not the many times I was beaten, fucked or humiliated. But being there, seeing Reed for the first time in a year, I needed to cry.

"Izzy, oh God it's so good to see you." He hugged me for a long time before pulling away to look at me. "Shit, is that tears? Did you go and get all soft on me? And what the fuck happened to your face? And your hair?"

I pushed at his chest, snorting a laugh as I wiped my nose with the sleeve of my sweater.

“Minor accident and what happened to you? What’s with the beard and did you live in the gym while I was gone?” My brother was a lot larger than I remembered and his beard was blond. In fact, all the visible hair I could see was blond.

He shrugged. “What can I say, I missed my baby sis and I needed a distraction.”

“And the blond?”

“Started dating this chick who thought I’d look good as a blond. Turns out she was right.”

“So, you dyed your hair for some chick?”

“Not just any chick...my wife.”

I must have looked like I was shot between the eyes. That was a new one. What the fuck. “Wife! Who the fuck married you?”

"That sounded vaguely like an insult. Where are your bags?" Since I left the country with nothing, I returned with nothing but these jeans and sweater I was currently in, which wasn't very fashionable, but comfortable.

“No bags, just me and that was an insult. You’re not marriage material, you’re barely boyfriend material, and worst of all you got married before me,” I said still shocked.

“Well as it turns out I’m both and we’re divorced,” he said turning and walking toward the truck.

I walked next to him, laughing. "At least she came to her senses."

Placing his hand around my shoulder and having me up against his armpit gave him perfect access to nuggie my head. “Shut up.”

“Ahh, shit I forgot how much that hurts,” I said removing his arm and trying to fix my hair. “Nice wheels.” I motioned to the truck as we approached.

“Yep.” He tapped the hood, moving around to the driver’s side. “This is my baby. Hop on in and check out the interior.”

We both got in the car and I marveled at the beauty of the inside.
